History of the Crematorium
The crematorium is located within the grounds of North Cemetery in Strouden Avenue, Bournemouth. W L Clowes designed Bournemouth’s East Chapel in 1927 in a Gothic style. It included an underground area that would later house the crematory. Work began to install the crematory in 1937 and the first cremation took place in 1938.
In 1959, a waiting room, staff area, and toilets were added, with the West Chapel then added in a second phase alongside the vestry, organ chamber and an underground committal room.
The memorial gardens and grounds have been improved over the years, with the most recent addition being a wildlife pond and wildflower area that provide a natural habitat as part of the crematorium’s environmental strategy. North Cemetery has previously won ‘Gold’ in the Britain in Bloom competition.
